Claude ABEILLE

He studied with Robert Couturier at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, graduating in 1952. While beginning his career as a sculptor with numerous studies of torsos, he joined the team headed by André Malraux to produce the art books "L'Univers des Formes" (illustrations and layout). In 1964, he was awarded the Bourdelle Prize for sculpture. He exhibited at the Musée Bourdelle in 1964, 1969 and 1979. Since 1964, his career really took off. He regularly exhibited at various Salons in France and abroad. He also received a large number of government commissions: Mulhouse in 1965 and 1972, Cahagnes in 1967, Istres in 1974, Villefontaine-Isle-d'Abeau and Montreuil in 1978, Aulnay-sous-Bois in 1981, etc... He practised direct carving (stone or marble) as well as modelling, and created bronzes in which his taste for movement and the folds of drapery are apparent. In 2011, he created a monumental bas-relief of Christ for the new church in Les Lilas. He was elected a member of the Institut in 1992.
